Verizon files patent action against Cablevision

Verizon Communications wants the government to block imports of digital set-top boxes headed to Cablevision Systems because it claims the boxes and their related software infringe on five patents the telco holds.

In a complaint filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission, Verizon said the five patents are related to advanced interactive features that are "important to Verizon's success in the highly competitive fields of digital video and entertainment services and communications services" because they let Verizon deliver "more advanced and differentiated products and services than its competitors."

Cablevision "obviously plan(s) a vigorous defense," an MSO spokesman said, claiming that the complaint is evidence that "Verizon is having difficulty competing on its merits in the marketplace so they are resorting to filing lawsuits and pursuing regulatory bailouts."
