WealthTV launches 3D network, hunts for distributors
Independent cable network WealthTV said it is launching a 24-hour 3D channel, but the network doesn't have any distribution deals with cable or satellite affiliates.
Targeting wealthy viewers with lifestyle programming ranging from shows about travel destinations to fast cars, WealthTV has struggled to gain cable distribution. It filed a program carriage complaint at the FCC in 2010 against Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Cox Communications and Bright House Networks.
WealthTV has pursued over-the-top video distribution as an alternative, and last year launched a dedicated channel on Roku's Internet video service. WealthTV said Wednesday that its 3D channel is available through Roku's 2.5 million receivers, but it didn't announce any cable or satellite carriage agreements.
With some distributors looking for 3D content that they can offer to subscribers that have purchased 3DTVs, WealthTV's approach could help it gain distribution in pay TV homes. The network describes its 3D channel as a 24-hour network, but didn't say how many hours of original programming will be repeated each day. A WealthTV spokesperson didn't respond to a request for comment.
