Wireless is hot as Clearwire features Rover, muni WiFi returns

While the Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC-WI)-Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) dust-up apparently still has a few rounds to go, Clearwire's (Nasdaq: CLWR) announcement that it would enter the pay-as-you-go business went as predicted. Yes, the WiMAX provider is offering a new service (officially named Rover and aimed at the younger generation).

Clearwire, a joint venture of majority partner Sprint (NYSE: S), cable operators Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), TWC and Bright House Networks, and Internet interlopers Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), said the service will be available in all 49 of its markets and at retail through Clear, Best Buy and independent wireless dealers in Houston and St. Louis.

While Clearwire is fourth generation technology, good old fashioned WiFi is the focus in Provo, Utah that "illustrates a trend in which community WiFi applications are providing broadband Internet connections that are cheaper and easier to install than cable systems" according to an InformationWeek article that details the Ruckus Wireless technology being used by the self-contained Cambria Community there.

Finally, residents of the Village of Maywood, Ill. are apparently feeling a little safer these days thanks to a Motorola (NYSE: MOT)-built wireless video security system deployed for the community by Current Technologies.
