Competitive cable TV provider Wide Open West (WOW) has converted about 20 percent of its gear to support DOCSIS 3.0 and a company spokesperson told Light Reading Cable that the network would probably upgrade to that CableLabs' certified 100 Mbps second data process "over the course of the next year or so."

That would open up the competitive high-speed tracks in such markets as Chicago and Detroit, where WOW competes with Comcast; Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, where the service provider battles Time Warner Cable and Evansville, Ind. where Insight Communications is the incumbent.

DOCSIS 3.0 offers speed bursts up to 100 Mbps per second. Those MSOs, including Comcast and TWC that have already deployed it also charge more for the higher speeds--sometimes much more. WOW, which at the moment offers 15 Mbps down/2 Mbps up as its highest speed, isn't talking about how fast it plans to go or how much it plans to charge.
