Top German cable operator Kabel Deutschland said it licensed the Reference Design Kit (RDK) software stack that Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) have been pitching to other cable operators through their RDK Management LLC joint venture.
Comcast developed the RDK platform to launch its next-generation Xfinity X1 digital cable service, and last summer it announced that it was teaming up with Time Warner Cable to license the technology to other cable operators.
John Malone's Liberty Global was one of the first international providers to sign an RDK license. While Cox Communications has said that it signed an evaluation license, Comcast and TWC haven't yet announced license agreements with any other U.S. cable MSOs.
Comcast and TWC are also hoping to use RDK to introduce set-tops that could be marketed through retail outlets such as Best Buy.
"To the extent that we can see more and more consumer devices--not just operator devices running the RDK--that's a huge benefit for us," Time Warner Cable SVP of Technology Matt Zalesko said at The TV of Tomorrow Show conference in New York in December.
