DirecTV set for price hikes in 2018

DirecTV has announced monthly price increases ranging from $2 for the base “Select” tiers to $8 for “Ultimate Premier” package.

After losing 251,000 customers in the third quarter for its legacy satellite platform, DirecTV has announced price hikes across tiers.

As first spotted by TV Predictions, parent company AT&T has announced monthly price increases ranging from $2 for the base “Select” tiers to $8 for the “Ultimate Premier” package. 

Regional sports networks surcharges, meanwhile, will shoot up between 70 cents to $1 a month, depending on the tier. The a la carte price for the Outdoor Channel, meanwhile, spiked by $1.49 a month to $4.99. Prices for Spanish-language programming bundles also increased. 

“Due to higher costs of programming, the monthly rate for the below services will increase on January 21, 2018, and the changes will appear in billing statements starting on that date,” AT&T said in a statement.

Serving an industry-leading 25.083 million pay TV customers, AT&T had an average revenue per customer in the third quarter of $123.45, according to IDC US Consumer Multiplay and Broadband Services. That was third among major operators behind Comcast ($151.51) and Altice USA ($142.75).

AT&T did not, however, announce price increases for its skinnier DirecTV Now virtual bundles.
