Comcast stays coy on DOCSIS 3.1 deployment plans in Jacksonville

Comcast will not confirm a reported plan to expand its deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 services in Jacksonville, Fla.

“There’s not much I can share with you on this topic as it pertains to Florida plans,” Comcast spokeswoman Mindy Kramer said to FierceCable

"As you know, earlier this year Comcast announced plans to introduce the world’s first DOCSIS 3.1-powered gigabit internet service to residential and business customers in a number of markets including Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, Detroit, and Miami. Regarding plans for additional markets or timing, we have nothing to announce at this time,” she added.

On Tuesday, the Jacksonville Business Journal reported that Comcast is planning to deploy DOCSIS 3.1-powered 1-gig services in Jacksonville early next year.

“At the end of the day, this is exciting for people who want to get gig speed over a cable connection without fiber,” Comcast spokeswoman Cindy Arco told the Business Journal. “This is for when the economics and installation and timelines are not feasible, it’s a more seamless transition for people who want high-speed internet and want to go this way.”

However, an individual close to the MSO told FierceCable that Arco’s disclosure was “premature.”

While Comcast has offered pricey 2-gig service based on fiber for several years, it is now rolling out more affordable 1-gig residential service based on HFC network infrastructure using the DOCSIS 3.1 standard.

After deploying in Atlanta and Nashville, Tenn. earlier this year, the MSO announced earlier this month that it had rolled out DOCSIS 3.1 services in Chicago. Detroit and Miami were listed as next stops, but Jacksonville was not on the list.
