Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) is preparing to launch an Xfinity TV application for flash-enabled connected TVs manufactured by Samsung that will allow subscribers to navigate cable programming without using a set-top, a spokesman told FierceCable.
The nation's largest cable MSO is also talking to other consumer electronics manufacturers about delivering programming to connected TVs, the Comcast spokesman said. "Our priority is to get the experience right, to launch initially with Samsung, and go from there," he added.
Comcast wouldn't offer a timeline for the launch of the Xfinity TV app on Samsung TVs. The MSO and Samsung will likely detail their launch plans next week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Samsung and Comcast first announced plans to partner on delivering cable programming to connected TVs at the 2011 CES. Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) announced a similar partnership with Samsung at the 2011 convention.
Time Warner Cable announced in May that it would support the delivery of HBO Go on connected TVs from Samsung, in addition to Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Xbox 360 and Roku's Internet video set-tops. But Time Warner Cable hasn't yet launched an app for Samsung TVs that can deliver dozens of cable networks.
In August, Samsung and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) launched an app that allows FiOS TV subscribers to access 26 cable networks on Samsung connected TVs, including HBO, MTV, CNN, Food Network and HGTV. Samsung and rival LG also demonstrated apps at The Cable Show convention in May that can deliver live TV and video-on-demand programming to Cablevision's (NYSE: CVC) Optimum subscribers.
