DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) is attempting to woo subscribers shopping online Monday with a $25 monthly subscription video package that includes 140 cable networks and three free months of HBO, Showtime and Starz.
The satellite TV provider announced the aggressive "cyber Monday" promotion this morning. DirecTV said subscribers that order one of its programming bundles on Monday, ranging from the $29.99 monthly Entertainment package to the $89.99 monthly Premiere package, would receive an additional $5 monthly discount for 12 months. It is also pitching its new Genie multiroom DVR as part of the Cyber Monday promotion.
DirecTV is the only major pay TV distributor offering Cyber Monday discounts to new subscribers. The pricing discount comes as DirecTV is finding it challenging to grow its subscriber base. The company lost 52,000 subscribers during the second quarter, and reported slower subscriber growth during the third quarter compared to the same period last year.
