France to spend $27 billion on broadband initiative

French government officials said Friday that the country will spend €20 billion ($27 billion) to build fiber-based broadband networks over the next decade. France plans to dedicate three tranches of over €6 billion ($7.9 billion) each. These funds will come from three sources: service providers like France Telecom Orange, a combination of service providers and local government, and state and local government entities.
