HDNet founder Mark Cuban is the first network executive to publicly support Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) for deploying a multiroom DVR that contains an "Auto Hop" feature that can remove all commercials from primetime shows on the Big Four networks.
"What Dish is doing with Hopper is smart because you have to start pushing the envelope," the Dallas Mavericks owner said at the Produced by Conference, according The Wrap. "Wherever we are, people use the best technology available."
The ad-skipping technology Dish has included with its new Hopper multiroom DVR has sparked copy infringement lawsuits from ABC, CBS (NYSE: CBS) and Fox, and has also been criticized by Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) CEO Glenn Britt and Discovery Communications (Nasdaq: DISCA) CEO David Zaslav for the threat it could pose to ad revenue.
But Cuban said Dish and the broadcast networks should look to reach a compromise in with the satellite-TV provider, suggesting Dish could pay a premium to the networks in exchange for offering its subscribers commercial free programming.
"If I'm CBS and I make money off of advertising, I am upset but there is nothing to say there can't be a compromise," Cuban told conference attendees.
