While no cable operators or satellite TV providers have begun transmitting programming in Ultra HD format, that's not stopping Sony Electronics from kicking off a marketing campaign for its new line of 4K Ultra HD TVs.
In addition to a TV spot that it is running nationally, Sony said it is teaming up with Best Buy to showcase the new TVs. It is also touting the Ultra HD TVs through Sony retail stores. Best Buy is selling a 65-inch Ultra HD TV from Sony for $6,999.98.
Ultra HD TVs can display more than 8 million pixels per frame, which is four times the resolution offered by most HD TVs in U.S. cable and satellite homes. In February, DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) trademarked the brands 4KN, 4KNET, 4KNetwork and 4K, suggesting that it may develop an original network containing 4K, or Ultra HD, programming. But it may be several years before programmers and distributors are able to offer programming in the Ultra HD format.
