TiVo (Nasdaq: TIVO) will be the cornerstone of a new bundle of broadband services--the so-called "Classic Collection"--that Virgin Media is launching for subscribers with 12- and 18-month subscriptions.
Besides TiVo, the bundle offers subscribers 30 Mbps fiber optic broadband, unlimited calls to other landlines and all Virgin Mobiles (of course) on weekends, a wide range of "starter TV and radio stations, including a basic HD service" and video-on-demand via Virgin's pay-per-rental service.
The ability to use TiVo, though, is the bundle's foundation because it "offers cutting edge interactivity with a continually evolving line-up of apps, such as Spotify, extending the functionality of the service," Virgin Media said in a story by USwitch.
TiVo, too, is profiting from its relationship with Virgin. TiVo's global subscription business was up 41 percent year-over-year (230,000 new customers joined the ranks between April and June 2012) and Virgin Media reportedly accounts for about a third of TiVo's 2.7-million-worldwide subscriber base.
While at the leading edge, however, TiVo is not the only part of the Classic Collection that Virgin expects will draw in new customers--and retain old ones. The service, Virgin Media COO Andrew Barron told USwitch, "is a testament to the growing mainstream demand for super-fast broadband and next generation connected television. Our customers tell us they love being able to enjoy their favorite TV shows at a time that suits them and that they're discovering new family favorites thanks to TiVo."
