New products and/or services from Verizon Wireless' (NYSE:VZ) joint venture with cable MSOs Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Bright House Networks and Cox Communications will likely launch in the fourth quarter of this year. Speaking at a Jefferies 2013 Global TMT Conference today, Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead hinted that the fourth quarter will be an important time for Verizon in the marketplace and that the company has an active pipeline of products from its MSO partners.
Although Mead wouldn't provide specifics on those products, he said Verizon customers are showing great demand for video over their mobile devices and the company believes there is a lot of potential for these types of products. Last August, Verizon formed the SpectrumCo joint venture with the cable companies when it acquired $3.9 billion in nationwide AWS spectrum from the firms. "We want to create solutions that will make a difference for consumers," Mead said.
Mead noted that Verizon already allows its subscribers to download video content from its FiOS video service and from Comcast over its LTE network. "If you are traveling across country and want to download movies you can do it over the LTE network," he said. "You can download them and take them with you." When asked how these products would roll out, Mead said there will be more information coming soon on the different products, adding that the companies will be able to advertise them extensively across the various platforms.
Earlier this year, Comcast's Mobility Solutions team posted a job position for a director of product management mobility solution in which it said it was looking for someone to pioneer Comcast's mobile strategy and deliver "magical experiences that move seamlessly across all your digital devices." In addition, the cable MSO teamed with Verizon Wireless to form a joint innovation lab last year to develop new products.
