Cable overbuilder WideOpenWest dominated a Consumer Reports survey of the top cable TV, high-speed Internet and phone providers. In addition to being ranked the top triple-play provider, WOW tied Verizon (NYSE: VZ) FiOS as the No. 1 TV provider, and it was ranked the second-best phone provider.
WOW led the triple-play rankings with a score of 79, topping Verizon's FiOS, which scored a 75, according to the report released Thursday. They were followed by Suddenlink (73); Bright House Networks (71); AT&T (NYSE: T) U-verse and Cox Communications (each with a score of 66); Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) (65); Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL) and Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) (61); Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR) (60); and Frontier (Nasdaq: FTR) (59).
Verizon FiOS and WOW led the ranking of the top pay TV providers, each scoring 74. DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) placed third with a score of 72. Bright House and Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) tied for fourth, scoring 70. They were followed by Wave / Astound Broadband and Cable One (69); AT&T U-verse (68); Cox (67); Suddenlink (66); Cablevision (64); RCN (62); Comcast (61); Time Warner Cable (60); Charter (59); and Mediacom (54). The former Insight Communications cable systems that Time Warner Cable acquired last year earned a score of 64.
WOW scored 78 in the rankings of the top Internet providers, with Verizon FiOS taking second place with a score of 76. They were followed by EarthLink's cable modem service (75); Wave / Astound (74); Frontier (73); Bright House (72); TDS (71); Cox (70); EarthLink DSL, CenturyLink and Cable One (69); Suddenlink and AT&T U-verse (68); and Cablevision, Insight and Knology (67).
Consumer Reports said it based the rankings on surveys it conducted with 84,000 readers. The scores of of the top triple-play bundles were based on measures of service satisfaction, value, billing, support and added features.
