Amazon to support UltraViolet digital downloads
Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) is working with a major Hollywood studio to allow subscribers that buy a movie from its online video store to access the video on any platform supported by the UltraViolet digital rights locker, executive vice president for digital media told attendees at the Consumer Electronics Show Wednesday.
While Carr didn't name which studio Amazon is working with, it's a big score for Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem consortium, which has been pushing retailers, cable operators, movie studios and other key players to support its digital rights locker. Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and Cox Communications are also members of the DECE consortium.
While no cable MSO has incorporated UltraViolet into its platform to date, the technology could one day allow a digital cable subscriber that buys a movie from Amazon or another retailer to watch that same movie through a cable video-on-demand system or another platform at no additional charge. Cable technology vendor CSG (Nasdaq: CSGS) is also demonstrating an UltraViolet implementation that cable MSOs could use at CES this week.
