ATSC to develop 3D TV broadcast standard
A technology standard for delivering 3DTV content to both fixed terrestrial receivers and mobile devices will be in place within one year, the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) said Monday.
The group said it is developing a standard that will provide methods for transmitting 3D content to fixed and mobile devices which will allow for the real-time delivery of views from the left eye and right eye.
Several other industry groups are working on 3D standards, including CableLabs and the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE). ATSC didn't say in Monday's announcement how it may work with other groups on standards efforts, and a spokesperson didn't return a call for comment.
ATSC said its standards work is being led by Youngkwon Lim, representing the Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI) in Daejon, South Korea.
"The addition of 3D TV capability to the DTV broadcast standard will foster new broadcast services while preserving the integrity of legacy TV receivers by adopting a system that allows for simultaneous delivery of 2D HDTV, Mobile DTV, and 3D programs within the same channel while ensuring backwards compatibility," ATSC president Mark Richter said in Monday's announcement.
