CableLabs launches NetworkFX, extends online trust management appeal
CableLabs is launching its first subsidiary, an online trust management organization called NetworkFX, to manage the cable TV industry's public key infrastructure (PKI).
The launch of the Louisville, Colo., unit comes after CableLabs has worked for the last 12 years to issue and manage more than 200 million digital PKI certificates ensuring secure broadband connections for networked devices. Establishing NetworkFX's capabilities as part of a subsidiary will help the group extend its trust management capabilities to other industries, including banking, consumer electronics, healthcare, utilities and others.
The online trust management task has grown immensely with the rapid adoption of more types of networked devices, including laptops, smartphones, tablets, Blu-ray players, game consoles, connected TVs, alarm systems, medical devices and others. NetworkFX can assist in the setup, governance, operation and upgrade of the digital security infrastructure for a variety of platforms, with benefits that include fast deployment, on-demand scalability, policy management, highly secure and reliable operations, and one-step ordering of PKI certificates through a Web interface.
The launch of the new unit is a strong example of how CableLabs can broaden its appeal outside of the cable TV industry, while continuing to guide and incubate cable sector innovations.
