Cablevision asks CWA to stop calling subscribers about Hurricane Sandy credits
Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) is demanding that the Communications Workers of America halt a phone campaign in which it is telling subscribers who lost service after Hurricane Sandy that they need to call the MSO to request credits on their bills.
CWA, which failed in an attempt to unionize Cablevision employees in the Bronx in June, said that it received a cease-and-desist letter from Cablevision on Thursday. But union representatives said they plan to continue their robocalling campaign. CWA is criticizing Cablevision's policy of requesting that subscribers call it to request a refund, noting that Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) is automatically offering to credit subscribers who lost service because of power outages and network damage from the super storm.
Tim Dubnau, an organizing coordinator at CWA, said the union wants Cablevision to change its hurricane credit policy and agree to bargain a new contract for employees. While Cablevision employees in Brooklyn agreed to join CWA earlier this year, the union has complained that Cablevision discouraged its Bronx employees from joining the union.
"We're trying to educate our neighbors in Cablevision's footprint that Cablevision is treating everyone with utter contempt," Dubnau told FierceCable Tuesday.
Cablevision said in a statement that it objects to a third party calling its customers, "and falsely implying an affiliation with Cablevision."
