Cablevision expanding OMGFAST wireless broadband service to Ft. Lauderdale, Miami-Dade County
Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) may have sold its broadband wireless spectrum to Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) last year, but that's not stopping the company from expanding the footprint for its OMGFAST high-speed Internet service in Florida.
OMGFAST announced Wednesday that it launched its 50 Mbps wireless broadband service from a new tower in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which will allow it to market its $29.95 monthly product to an additional 23,000 homes passed by Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and AT&T's (NYSE: T) U-verse Internet service. The company said OMGFAST will also launch from new towers this year in Miami-Dade County. It's already available to about 90,000 homes in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
The company also said it will give new customers who order service by April 30 a "lifetime price guarantee" on the $29.95 monthly fee, which undercuts the subscription fees of high-speed Internet services marketed by Comcast, AT&T, Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Bright House Networks and other broadband providers in Florida.
Formerly known as Clearband, OMGFAST relies on multichannel video distribution service (MVDDS) spectrum that Cablevision subsidiary DTV Norwich acquired through an FCC auction in 2004. Cablevision agreed to sell 45 MVDDS licenses to Dish Network last October for $80 million as part of the settlement of a breach-of-contract suit involving its former Voom HD business. Dish disclosed in its annual report last week that it agreed to lease four of the MVDDS licenses to a Cablevision subsidiary.
Cablevision has used OMGFAST to test some new products. Last summer, OMGFAST began offering subscribers the option of leasing the Apple TV set-top for $5 monthly. In January, OMGFAST kicked off a promotion in which subscribers can also rent Roku's Internet video set-tops for $5 monthly.
