Comcast forms VIPER team to deliver IP video to Apple, Microsoft, Samsung devices

Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) has formed an engineering team called VIPER (Video IP Engineering and Research) which is focused on delivering video on multiple platforms, including devices from Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Samsung, according to several job listings it posted recently.

"The VIPER Service Delivery Engineering team is a new, small and fast-moving team of world-class experts who are innovating in end-to-end video delivery. We are a team that thrives on big challenges, results, quality, and agility," Comcast wrote in a job listing posted on its Comcast Careers site Monday for a VIPER service delivery engineer.

Responsibilities for the person who lands the position include "end to end service delivery engineering for large-scale fault tolerant distributed Web server farm delivering billions of transactions per day," Comcast wrote. The position is based in Littleton, Colo.

Comcast mentions the VIPER team in several other recent job listings, including the position of content origination engineer. The engineer who fills that position would help Comcast use adaptive streaming video software to deliver content to several devices, including Apple's iPad, Samsung TVs and Microsoft's Xbox, according to the job listing. "Video formats include Apple HLS, Adobe HDS, Microsoft Smooth, and DASH," Comcast said.

Comcast announced in January that it would launch its Xfinity TV app on Samsung TVs. It was also one of the first pay TV distributors to launch an app for Apple's iPad.

Using the VIPER acronym is a unique choice for Comcast, as vipers also refer to venomous Old World snakes. It's worth noting that while Comcast has technology that could potentially allow it to sell subscription video through IP-connected devices to subscribers outside its cable footprint, that's not one of the features it mentions in the VIPER job listings.

A Comcast spokesperson didn't respond to a request for comment Monday about the VIPER job listings.
