Comcast to use AnyPlay devices to stream live channels to iOS and Android devices
Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) will soon kick off trials in two markets of an AnyPlay service which will allow cable subscribers to stream their entire channel lineups to Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad and Motorola Mobility's (NYSE: MMI) Xoom tablets.
The AnyPlay service will rely on the Televation sidecar set-top from Motorola Mobility, which uses WiFi to transmit live TV channels to mobile devices. Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) already allow their subscribers to view live TV channels on the iPad, but don't require the installation of an additional set-top.
"There are multiple ways to deliver a video feed to tablets and other IP devices in the home, and different implementations deliver different features and benefits," Comcast spokesman Peter Dobrow told FierceCable. "This is an implementation that allows for delivery of the entire channel lineup to tablets, while also providing flexibility for further product enhancements in the future," he added.
Dobrow wouldn't say which Comcast markets will be the first to get the AnyPlay service.
