DirecTV lands Starz content for TV Everywhere service
DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) said a carriage deal it struck with Starz Entertainment includes rights to distribute movies and TV series from Starz, Encore and other networks owned by the premium content supplier through its upcoming DirecTV Everywhere service, which is set to debut later this year.
Starz is the first programmer that DirecTV has identified as a supplier for its DirecTV Everywhere multiplatform programming product, which will allow subscribers to view content on the Web and mobile devices such as Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad. The top satellite TV provider also has rights to distribute content from Fox-owned cable networks such as FX and National Geographic Channel on DirecTV Everywhere, a source said. DirecTV obtained the Fox rights as part of a broad carriage deal it reached with the company last fall.
DirecTV Everywhere could help DirecTV compete against similar TV Everywhere products marketed by Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Dish (Nasdaq: DISH) and other pay TV providers. The Starz deal gives it rights to movies from Sony Pictures, Disney and other studios. Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), which previously had a deal to offer its subscribers movies from Starz, took a beating on Wall Street last year after Starz announced that it wouldn't renew its contract with the online video provider.
