Its Explorer app incorporates Thurz ratings, which pick the hottest live sporting events, and deliver real-time sports stats. Dish said the app suggests TV shows and movies to subscribers by relying on data collected from social networks and viewing data collected from set-tops in Dish subscriber homes. It also allows subscribers to log into Facebook and Twitter, and track posts related to the programs they are watching.

The app could help Dish compete against DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV), Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and other pay TV providers that have developed similar apps for the iPad, iPhone and mobile devices that run Google's Android platform. Dish said the Explorer app connects to the Hopper via a WiFi connection.
