EchoStar pulls plug on ViP-TV transport service
Four years after launching a programming transport service for rural cable operators and telephone companies, EchoStar (Nasdaq: SATS) plans to pull the plug on its ViP-TV service in September.
The shutdown could drive new business to Avail-TVN, a content distributor which, like EchoStar's ViP-TV, also relies on MPEG-4 to deliver video. Avail-TVN plans to pitch customers its services during a webinar on Monday.
Cable operators that have used EchoStar's IPTV programming delivery service include Vermont's Duncan Cable TV, Wyoming's TCT West Inc. and Ohio's CT Communications
