Knology expands in Sioux Falls, challenging Midcontinent

Prompting incumbent cable operator Midcontinent Communications to offer discounts to subscribers, cable overbuilder Knology (Nasdaq: KNOL) is expanding its footprint in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Knology entered Sioux Falls in 2007 when it merged with PrairieWave Communications. It's now laying fiber throughout the city, and targeting Midcontinent customers with a triple-play offer of $99 monthly subscriptions for digital cable, high-speed Internet and phone service.

Midcontinent is attempting to stave off the competition by offering customers credits of up to $50 on their monthly cable bills in order to match Knology's pricing.

In addition to targeting cable subscribers, Knology is recruiting cable talent. It recently recruited Abu Khan, the general manager of Comcast's (Nasdaq: CMCSA) Augusta, Ga., cable system to run its operation in the city.

The company, headquartered in West Point, Ga., picked up about 2,100 basic video customers during the third quarter. It counts about 258,000 video subscribers, 276,000 voice customers and 259,000 high-speed Internet subscribers.
