A semi-magnificent seven of consumer electronics vendors and suppliers--Best Buy, Google, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics, Nagravision, SageTV, Sony Electronics and TiVo--have banded together as the AllVid Tech Company Alliance to push federal regulators to look favorably on CableCARD replacement technology as the gateway to greater freedom for non-proprietary connected devices. The group believes that AllVid is and should be a part of the FCC's proposed national broadband plan.

The alliance wants the FCC to "bring television into the 21st century as envisioned by Congress," Sony general counsel Michael Williams said as Matthew Zinn, TiVo general counsel added that AllVid "can build on the successes of standards to bring MVPD content, including bi-directional programming, to the subscriber's personal entertainment ecosystem on a wide variety of devices."

The cable industry, as posited by its mouthpiece lobby organization the NCTA, disagrees.
